NP517776Our team of coaches at Grips Gymnastics Club is nurturing, inspiring and passionate about sport of gymnastics. We respect each athlete’s individual goals and abilities. Our programme will allow children and adults to experience gymnastics in a fun, safe and supportive environment, where everyone is progressed at their own rate.

Grips Club owner and Head Coach Melic Tichabaev is offering an athlete-centred approach to gymnastics training, aspiring to create exceptional athletes and coaches. Melic has over 40 years of coaching experience. He was invited to join the Australian Institute of Sport after 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona as a specialist coach in Artistic Gymnastics and Acrobatics.

Prior to that he participated in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea and 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain with Team USSR. He then coached Australian Team in 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA. He also coached in 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada; 1996 World Championship in Sabato, Japan, as well as every World and European Championship, and The Goodwill Games between 1982 and 1992.

Among the gymnasts Melic coached in the past there are numerous Olympic and World Champions, including Elena Shushunova, Rozalia Galieva, Oksana Chusovitina, Natalya Yurchenko, Olga Mostepanova, Oksana Omelyanchik, Svetlana Boginskaya, Tatiana Gutsu, Tatiana Lysenko, Svetlana Khorkina. He also coached the numerous Australian Olympians.

In recognition of his work in Australia he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 for the outstanding achievements in promotion, participation and development of Australian Gymnastics. Internationally he was awarded title of Master of Sport of USSR, Distinguished Sportsman of USSR, Honorary Coach of the USSR and Honorary Coach of Uzbekistan.

Melic holds a degree of Bachelor of Physical Education. He is currently accredited as a High Performance Coach with Gymnastics Australia. Throughout his work with AIS, WAIS and VIS Melic participated in devising and implementing numerous successful National and International development programs. He has strong commitment to the teaching and training. He gives Master Classes and seminars in tumbling and acrobatics on regular basis, as well as gymnastics clinics held by AIS, VIS and various gymnastic clubs in Victoria and interstate.
